DIY Coffee Table

DIY Coffee Table

I need a coffee table for our living room but we were struggling to find one that would fit and the only thing that works for me now is to make my own! The whole project took me about a week because I had to wait one day in between every coat of stain and polyurethane I applied. I've seen so many things online of people making things out of crates or pallets. I decided to make my first crate project! I soon will find something to make with a pallet (maybe some sort of bar on the wall).

I bought 4 crates from Joann Fabrics and used my 50% off and 40% off coupons as well as my teacher discount to get the supplies. This made out to be about $40 (Plus another $10 for the stain and polyurethane) for a total of $50 table!

I used a drill bit first to drill holes in the crates where I intended to screw them in. I used 5 screws on each crate!

I first sanded the crates and then stained them using minwax wood stain in the color Jacobean.

I used 2 coats to ensure even staining. I have the crates in my garage and it has taken 3 days to fully dry.

Once the crates were dry, I applied 2 coats of the minwax polyeurithane semi gloss finish since we will get a lot of use out of our table. I just applied it according to the package directions.

I also used a foam brush that does really apply the stain/sealer on better. They are meant for one time use, so buy a few!

Here are some pictures of the finished product!

I wont pretend that it's an amazing piece of furniture - however, with better staining skills it would look better! Since I see this table a like a 1-2 year table and I think it will hold up!

The only thing left is to figure out what to use for the feet and make the table a little bit taller.
